Design for Longevity: Garden-Led Design for Health and Interconnected Living explores how spatial design can encourage long-term health, wellbeing, and resilience within urban environments. Situated in Harlesden, Brent, the project responds to the challenges of suburban intensification by proposing an alternative model of development that prioritises people, community, and environmental quality alongside housing delivery.

Drawing inspiration from research into the world’s Blue Zones—regions associated with exceptional longevity—the project investigates how the built environment can support healthier lifestyles through social connection, natural movement, access to nature, and healthy food systems. These principles are translated into a garden-led design approach that integrates housing, public space, urban agriculture, and community infrastructure.

At the heart of the proposal is the transformation of Harlesden Plaza into a neighbourhood public square, creating new opportunities for gathering, growing, learning, and civic participation. The project seeks to strengthen existing community assets and organisations, while improving access to health, wellbeing, and support services.

Beyond physical design, the project reimagines the role of the architect as a facilitator—working between residents, community groups, local authorities, and developers to shape more inclusive and resilient neighbourhoods. Sustainable materials, green infrastructure, and low-carbon construction methods further support the project’s environmental ambitions.

Ultimately, the project proposes a spatial framework for longevity, demonstrating how housing, landscape, and social infrastructure can work together to create healthier, more connected, and more resilient communities.
